Electrical Design Case Histories

St. Louis Metropolitan Sewer District, MO

ECC managed the implementation of an 80-site SCADA installation on the St. Louis MSD Lemay Overflow Regulation System. This system functions to minimize and regulate the combined storm/sewer system consisting of gate stations and pump stations along the River des Peres and adjacent Mississippi River. Motorola Moscad SCADA telemetry/control units connected to a central computer and local network running Intellution HMI software provides complete control and status of the local pump station and cooling towers as well as all remote pump and gate stations. Remote terminal units (RTU's) are programmed to be "Smart", such that the central unit is not necessary for the local Moscad RTU to control the system. Motorola Moscad communications consist of Motorola MDLC, Modicon Modbus RTU protocols, as well as a communication driver programmed to connect to the Cutler-Hammer MINT device. Communication media consists of UHF radio frequency, RS485, RS232, and IP link connecting the Moscad units, Intellution computer network, Robicon VFD's, GE Multilin motor protection units, and Cutler-Hammer IMPACC motor starter communication network.

Large Rural Water District, Metro St. Louis, MO

ECC provided a complete turn-key design-build of this 24-site freshwater distribution SCADA system. ECC provided engineering consultant, field work, and system design services, as well as all computer/SCADA unit programming, panel manufacturing, installation, start-up, training and support. This system functions to distribute water to the 75,000 users throughout the county. A Motorola Moscad SCADA central telemetry/control unit connected to a central computer running Intellution HMI and Win911 alarm dialer software provides complete control, status, and remote alarm notification of all equipment in the system, including pressure control by variable frequency drives. Storage tanks, flow/totalization, and pressures are monitored and trended at the central site. Remote terminal units (RTU's) are programmed to be "Smart", such that the central unit is not necessary for the local Moscad RTU (many with local touchscreens) to control the system. Motorola Moscad units communicate via licensed UHF frequency.

Fulton, MO

ECC provided a complete turn-key design-build of this 14-site SCADA system. This system functions to provide information and control of the City's electrical distribution, natural gas distribution, and freshwater distribution systems. A Motorola Moscad SCADA central telemetry/control unit connected to a central computer and wide area network running Intellution HMI software provides complete control and status of substation reclosers and power consumption/alarms, natural gas pressure and flow totalization, and freshwater wells/storage tanks/variable frequency drives. Motorola Moscad units communicate via licensed VHF frequency.

Jefferson County, MO

ECC provided control panel manufacture and engineering services for this 10-site freshwater distribution SCADA system. This system functions to distribute water from St. Louis County throughout this Jefferson County water district. A Motorola Moscad SCADA central telemetry/control unit connected to a central computer running Intellution HMI software provides complete control and status of all equipment in the system, including automatic pressure control via variable frequency drives. System status is monitored and trended at the central site. Remote terminal units (RTU's) are programmed to be "Smart", such that the central unit is not necessary for the local PLC or RTU (many with local touchscreens) to control the system. Communications consist of Allen-Bradley Devicenet and DF1, Motorola MDLC, Modicon Modbus RTU protocols. Communication media consists of UHF radio frequency, RS485, RS232, and IP link connecting the Moscad units, Allen-Bradley PLC's, Intellution computer network, VFD's, and valves.

Marion, IL

ECC provided control panel manufacture and engineering services for this wastewater treatment plant and collection system. This system functions to control the collection and treatment system in this Illinois town. A Motorola Moscad SCADA central telemetry/control unit connected to a central computer running Intellution HMI software provides complete control and status of all equipment in the plant, which is divided into two separate systems, each having a Moscad to control. System status is monitored and trended at the central site. Remote terminal units (RTU's) are programmed to be "Smart", such that the central unit is not necessary for the local RTU to control the system. Communications consist of Motorola MDLC, Modicon Modbus RTU protocols. Communication media consists of UHF radio frequency and RS232 connecting the Moscad units and Intellution computer network.

Lake Kinkaid/Murdale, IL

ECC provided control panel manufacture and engineering services for this 9-site freshwater wholesale water distribution SCADA system, water treatment plant, and adjacent water district SCADA system. This system functions to control water treatment and distribution to surrounding communities, as well as to the adjacent water district system. A Motorola Moscad SCADA central telemetry/control unit connected to a central computer running Intellution HMI software provides complete control and status of all equipment in the system. Surrounding communities storage tanks/pump stations are monitored and controlled at the central site. Remote terminal units (RTU's) are programmed to be "Smart", such that the central unit is not necessary for the local RTU to control the system. Communications consist of Motorola MDLC and Modicon Modbus RTU protocols. Communication media consists of VHF radio frequency and RS232 connecting the Moscad units and Intellution computer.
